That is, how can one know the percentage of people that buy something from an e-commerce site.for every 100 people that visit, how many people buy,for every 1000 people that visit, how many people buy,for every 10,000 people that visit, how many people buy,etc.

Yes and no. I expect you collect data already in one way or the other. Either local server or remote server analysis. If not, consider subscribing to a remote server analysis service, making sure they will supply a transaction log. You will then hold the transaction log data up against the data on user visits and path analysis. A non technical report should be available. I don’t know where you are from, but in Europe, this service is widely available.
