I have a web site that I use to make money for some extra cash and I truly hope that ecommerce continues on an upward trend. 
With computers continuing to grow in popularity, I think the short-term future is still good. Long term – who knows? Technology will guide that.
This is what an ecommerce web site looks like – not crazy with ads or salesy stuff. Just information and a few ads to generate some income. It works.
