is this field (like yahoo, google, and other big networks) suffering as much as others are because of the bad economy? is it a bad field to get into right now?

If you have been following the news lately, then you probably know that online sales also suffered a bit this past holiday season. But, overall, they fared better than sales at brick and mortar stores.
I would speculate that, even if the economy continues to suffer for a while, that e-commerce will still remain strong, and will definitely be the place to be once things improve. Having a solid background or understanding in the web and how e-commerce functions is and will continue to be a very valuable skill set – regardless of what is happening with the economy.
